Reflections on the Road to the 10th Agroforestry Symposium in Musoma – Drawing Parallels Between Tanzania and COP30 in Belém

As global leaders gather in Belém, Brazil, for COP30, similar conversations are taking place thousands of kilometers away in Musoma, Tanzania. Both forums share pressing themes: agriculture, biodiversity, and climate finance. But in Musoma, these issues are far from theoretical—they shape daily life.

“Eighty percent of Tanzania’s population depends on small-scale farming,” reflects Vi Agroforestry’s Secretary General Charlotta Szczepanowski, on the way to the organization’s major symposium in Musoma. “At our symposium, these farmers have a voice. Vi Agroforestry creates a platform that ensures African decision-makers truly listen to those most affected by climate change.”

The 10th Annual Agroforestry Symposium, taking place November 13–15, 2025, will bring together farmers, policymakers, researchers, and development partners to advance sustainable farming practices. With more than 163 million trees planted and a decade of symposiums behind them, Vi Agroforestry has proven that its methods work.

“I want to urge world leaders to listen to these farmers,” Charlotta continues. “They must adapt their agriculture to withstand climate change—and when they do, they help us in the West by capturing the carbon molecules we’ve released through our use of fossil fuels.”
